<image:caption>Five Feathers: There was a specific time in my life when my daughter was very small and I would take her on stroller walks several times a day. We lived in a lovely neighborhood in Austin. One spring, I started finding feathers on every walk we took. I began to run out of places to put them. We used them in all kinds of crafts, and one day I decided to paint a picture of a few of my favorites. Feathers are a great example of something that is both ordinary and extraordinary. To birds, they require a lot of work to maintain and keep healthy for the practical purposes of flying and staying warm. To us humans, they are delicate, perfectly made, mysterious gifts from nature. My fascination with feathers started that spring and has never faded. I continue to find them regularly, especially when I am pondering something or walking in the woods to calm my mind.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Art Works</image:title>
<image:caption>Shears: I grew up in a very old house that was built before electricity. It had been updated, but while I lived there, parts of the house still had their original wiring. My dad was self-employed, running a small pub. He was also a blacksmith as a hobby and was always a very capable handyman and mechanic. In his later years, he even had a sawmill and would cut down trees and turn them into planks. I grew up surrounded by tools, and many of them were very old. Tarnished hammers and metal scissors that my dad called “shears” were commonplace. I have always loved the design of practical objects and how useful things become worn through being used. Poorly made tools do not get worn out because they do not last long enough. This was the first time I painted a still life of old tools, but I plan to continue the series with hammers, pencils, old brushes, and probably even more scissors.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Art Works</image:title>
<image:caption>Stones in Red and Teal: The stone paintings are part of a series I consider a visual meditation. They are created through a process that is different from my other work because I do not use a literal reference. The reference is personal memory and experience. The beaches of Maine are rocky, and each one tends to have stones, shells, or sea glass that are a little different. I have spent hours walking the shoreline, simply looking at them. Painting these pieces is a similar experience because the stones appear little by little from bits of color and texture. Once a painting is finished, I seem to have a different favorite stone each time I walk by. That is what I want the viewer to experience too: the calm feeling of looking for stones and shells while letting the mind settle into a meditation of color and shape.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Art Works</image:title>
<image:caption>My Partner’s Peaches: These peaches were exuberant and prolific, growing on my partner’s peach tree. It was one of the first years the tree bore fruit, and the peaches were gigantic and delicious. A fruit tree producing fruit is such an ordinary thing, but it is also a wonderful celebration of color and growth. I wanted to make sure he never forgot that season, so I painted this still life for him.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Art Works</image:title>
<image:caption>Time: This still life was created from objects found at a yard sale. The teeth were in a blue retainer box on a table, and I heard the clock ticking from a nearby cardboard box. The clock was barely functioning, ticking only intermittently. The dentures felt like a very strange object to find at a yard sale because they cannot be reused. I wondered about the stories behind them and their past owners. I painted this still life because I thought the objects told an interesting story about the passage of time. Once practical and now no longer in use, I found them very beautiful.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Art Works</image:title>
<image:caption>Bee Hare Meow in Green: This painting is part of my series “Bee Hare Meow,” a play on words that some people understand right away while others pause to ponder. I love having art in my home that reminds me of the life I want to lead, and being present in the moment is something I strive for, especially when I spend time with my children. Our modern lives are so fast-paced that it can be easy to rush through everything. This series is a playful reminder to be here now.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Art Works</image:title>
<image:caption>Emergence: This is one of my older paintings and was created on Earth Day. I had the idea of a monarch emerging from the earth as though it were the butterfly’s chrysalis, and I loved the concept. I am fascinated by how simply changing the scale of something can affect the feeling an image evokes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Art Works</image:title>
<image:caption>Luna Moth and Moon: This is the sister painting to “Emergence” and was created as a companion piece. I have been lucky enough to see several luna moths in real life, and they are among my very favorite creatures on Earth. This painting has a mystical quality that I love. Once again, it tells the story of ordinary things that are, in fact, out of the ordinary.</image:caption>
